The business problem
An attractive dashboard is not necessarily trustworthy. If finance and CRM disagree about sales, Power BI can visualize that disagreement but cannot resolve it. Business value starts with metric definitions and the decisions they support.
Warning signs
If management meetings debate whose number is correct or reports require hours of manual repair, the company needs a data foundation. The same happens when departments define active customer or completed order differently.
A practical implementation plan
Choose three decisions that need evidence, such as delivery delays, collections, or service profitability. For each metric document its system of record, definition, update frequency, and owner. Make data quality a release condition, not future cleanup.

An SME example
In an illustrative distributor, return discounts were missing from a sales report. Aligning the definition of net revenue between finance and sales made month-to-month reporting meaningful. The central fix was in business logic, not visualization.

How to measure results
Track missing and duplicate records, reconciliation differences between systems, refresh latency, and the share of decisions using agreed numbers. Capture a baseline before improvement so benefits can be evaluated rather than assumed.
Mistakes to avoid
Avoid connecting every spreadsheet at once, launching twenty ownerless dashboards, or exposing financial information through broad permissions. Licensing, report access, and sensitive data classification also belong in the design.

Your next action
Pick one dashboard tied to a specific management question. Build a small metric dictionary and source map, reconcile sample figures with their owners, pilot with a limited audience, and only scale once trust is established.
