Growth does not automatically improve operations

A company can hire more people and serve more customers while still relying on the founder to approve purchases, resolve routine issues and unblock delivery. This does not necessarily mean the team is weak; decision rights may simply be undefined.

Common symptoms include recurring questions, work stopping when the founder is away and the same issues being resolved repeatedly. Diagnose those bottlenecks before hiring another manager.

Start with three operating decisions

Identify the recurring process, its accountable owner and the decisions that person can make without escalation. Define limits, required information and exceptions.

  • Choose one frequently delayed process, such as purchase approvals.
  • Map its steps from request to closure and assign ownership.
  • Write down escalation rules and test the process with the team for two weeks.

Delegation is not the absence of control

Practical governance gives the team clear authority and leaves an auditable record of decisions. Only after those rules work should you select digital tools to support them.
